Blue Eyed Babies honeymooning in St Lucia

Picture
On August 8th, 2009 on the eve of our wedding day, Ryan and I said a tearful goodbye to all our wonderful family and friends and left our fabulous wedding reception and headed for the airport to begin our 4 day honeymoon on the tropical island of St,Lucia. Our flight left at 1am on Aug 9th and from there we flew to Toronto and then on to St Lucia. We arrived to our honeymoon destination  at 2:30pm.  We were so exhausted! The morning of my wedding, which I think is the equivalent of christmas morning, I woke up at 4:30am because I was so nervous and excited, so I hadnt had any sleep since friday night. However, despite being tired, I think I still looked pretty good , I had kept my bridal hair and makeup on and was planning to keep it for as long as possible in an attempt to encapsulate and project the feeling that "I am the bride and that this is my day" and thus encouraging my new husband and others to treat me as such, at least for a few more days. You can't blame me, I got hooked on the power of being the bride!  Anyways, the air that hits us as we descend out of the plane is hot and humid, its like being envelopped in a warm heating blanket. We go through customs and board a van that takes us to the Sandals Regency resort and golf course. It is about a hours drive through the island to get to the resort. We are making our way on a small winding road, going up and down the mountains, we pass through several small, impoverishd looking towns. We pass by banana, mango and almond trees and plantations. I think this pretty cool, back home I've never seen anything more exotic than an crab apple growing. There are  mangoes and bananas lying in the ditches of the road.  I think to myself if I ever become a homeless person, this is the place to be, I could survive on the bananas and mangoes that grow in abundance here. Eventually, we pull up to our all inclusive resort and are greeted with moist hand towels and tray full of fruity looking drinks. We indulge, check in and are shown to our room,  #134. Alas, my honeymoon chamber! A king size bed, a flat screen tv, a huge bathtub and a patio leading out to the pool and beach area, this is paradise inside paradise. The resort has 7 all you can eat restaurants and a variety of daily and nightly entertainment. We are very excited to eat at the all you can eat restaurants. We nap and that night head down to the restaurant for our first all you can eat experience on the island. We are seated, we have a view of the sunset, feel a nice cool breeze and order our food, I am really in paradise here. And then the food arrives and suddenly everything becomes clear...... it is a meal fit for a toddler!? Now we understand how they can afford to feed us.  We eat our meagre portion and leave, but we are still hungry, so we make our way to the next restaurant and have a second meal. By end of this meal we feel somewhat full. The next day we discover they serve a breakfast and lunch buffet and for the duration of our trip we make sure we don't miss that.  We spent our days laying on the beach, rolling in the waves, sleeping in, eating all manner of foods, watching movies on HBO, and playing a variety of the board games which we brought from home. One thing I discovered, it is NOT a good idea to play monopoly on your honeymoon, you may think that you'll be nice and calm because its your honeymoon and in love but that quickly changes when your husband refuses to make a trade and is threatening to leave you bankrupt.
I convinced Ryan to indulge in a couples massage with me, in fear of appearing "unmanly", he didn't tell the masseuse that she was massaging too hard and therefore his massage experience proved to be rather painful. We went kayaking, I don't think Ryan enjoyed that too much either  because I made him do most of the work and he ended up with sore arms. One of the activities I enjoyed doing was, one day we signed up to take a tour of some of the island by boat. We went with 3 other couples and an island guide named Bob.  By boat, we saw several of the impoverished seaside fishing villages, also some of the other luxury resorts. We went to Marigot Bay ,where they filmed the movie Dr. Dolittle, and also saw the houses of several famous people like Sophie Lauren, Mick Jagger and George Foreman. We then went to the Pitons, which are two mountains coming up from the ocean, Gros Piton and Petit Piton. At the Pitons, we anchored at a resort called La Jalousie and had the opportunity to do some snorkeling at the base of the gros Piton. The snorkeling was by far the best activity we did on our honeymoon. Ryan and I held hands the whole time and snorkeled our way through the warm crystal clear blue water, we saw an array of colorful fish, some small ones, some big ones, some stick shaped ones, it was amazing. All the fish you would see if you were looking into an aquarium full of exotic fish  only this time I was INSIDE the aquarium swmming with them, it was totally cool.  Afterwards, we visited an active volcano site, it was very smelly , Ryan especially did not enjoy this stop as it gave him a headache, we were not impressed and quite frankly a bit weary of being on an acive volcano. We visited several waterfalls and had the chance to bathe in a waterfall hot spring. Finally, we stopped in the city of Sousfriere, it appeared very rundown and down and out, in the middle of the city is a catholic church and in front of it is the city square and park where they used to have public hangings, creepy!! The last stop of our tour was lunch at a local restaurant, I couldnt tell you exactly what I ate but for the most part it was pretty good. So all in all, the tour was interesting, a bit overpriced but in a way worth it for the snorkeling experience. Being on the island and at the resort was both relaxing and frusterating at the same time, but the best part of everything was being with Ryan, my new perfect, handsome husband.  I have posted some pictures of our honeymoon, mostly of the resort and beaches and of Ryan eating. Enjoy!
